She Persisted
English National Ballet at Sadler’s Wells
In 2016 the English National Ballet, lead by Tamara Rojo, challenged gender stereotypes through She Said — a collection of feminist ballets with strong female leads. Two years on, Rojo furthered the concept with She Persisted, a collection of three ballets: Broken Wings, a visual extravaganza about the triumphs of Frida Kahlo; Nora, a beautiful piece inspired by the play A Dolls House; and Le Sacre du printemps, an intense ballet depicting the selection of a human sacrifice. Though stylistically diverse and conceived by different choreographers, each ballet captures the idea of women’s freewill and independence — an uncommon theme in the world of ballet. She Persisted is hugely innovative and future thinking in its approach to addressing gender imbalance.
